Where Did All the Clean Air Go? International Perspectives on Air Quality Management Issues
in the Developing World

The South African National Association for Clean Air (NACA), in conjunction with the International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA), invite submissions of abstracts for the 2008 NACA/IUAPPA conference, to be held in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa from 1-3 October 2008.

Guidelines on the format of abstracts may be viewed below or  CLICK HERE to download in .doc format. Only abstracts which conform to the formatting guidelines will be accepted. Please indicate clearly whether the abstract is for an oral or poster presentation.

Abstract submissions are to be followed by the submission of full papers. Papers should follow the Guidelines for Papers available on the conference website. Papers will be peer reviewed by members of the conference local scientific committee and the international advisory committee. Only abstracts for oral presentations which are accompanied by full papers will be included on the programme. Presenters of posters have the option of submitting only a poster for presentation at the conference, or a full paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

Where did all the Clean Air go? – an international perspective on air quality management issues in the developing world with emphasis on Africa

The key themes for the conference are:

  1. Co-Benefits of Air Pollution and Climate Change mitigation initiatives in the Developing World
  2. Air Quality Management Challenges and Opportunities in Mega Cities
  3. Challenges in Air Quality Management for Transportation

Paper and poster submissions are invited on a wide range of topics related to air pollution, including:

  • Regional air quality
  • Urban air quality
  • New developments in air quality science (e.g. abatement technologies)
  • Particulates
  • Air quality policy
  • Experiences in air quality management in the developing world
  • Air quality and human health
  • Air quality reporting for public information
  • Climate change

Format: Abstracts should be restricted to 300 words, and should be written in Arial size 11 font with single line spacing, and should be submitted in Word format (.doc)



GUIDELINES FOR PAPERS AND ABSTRACTS (CLICK HERE to download in .doc format)

Abstracts for the 2008 NACA/IUAPPA conference are to be emailed to Bev Terry ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) by Friday 20 June 2008. Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent to authors by 11 July 2008. The abstract is to be at most 300 words.

Abstracts are to be submitted in Word (.doc) format. The filename of the abstract is to start with the author’s surname and initials e.g. SmithJD_NACAabstract.doc

The abstract is to be formatted according to the following guidelines.

  1. Arial size 11 font and single line spacing are to be used.
  2. The TITLE is to be centred at the top of the page in bold Arial size 11 font, all capital letters
  3. Two lines should be skipped between the title and list of authors
  4. The list of authors should be centred, and written in normal Arial size 11 font. First name, middle initial and surname should be given for each author. The names of authors should be separated by a comma. A numerical superscript following each author name should be used to reference the affiliation of each author. The presenting author should be indicated with an asterisk (*)
  5. Two lines should be skipped between list of authors and their affiliations
  6. The list of affiliations should be left aligned. The institution of the author should be given following the numerical superscript, as well as the city and country of the institution. 
  7. One line should be skipped between the list of affiliations and the presenting author details. The first line of the presenting author’s details should be ‘*presenting author’. The postal address should be given on the following line, and the email address on the next line.
  8. Two lines should be skipped between the presenting author details and the body of the abstract
  9. The body of the abstract should be justified. Arial size 11 font is to be used. The abstract is to be at most 300 words
  10. Three lines are to be skipped after the body of the abstract
  11. The ‘Type of presentation requested:’ (either Oral or Poster) is to be indicated

All abstracts are to be followed by the submission of a full paper by 15 August 2008. Only abstracts accompanied by a full paper will be allocated a slot on the conference programme.
